Matter of Place Architects
MOPA is an architect led design practice. We are a CIC because we understand the impact the construction industry has on the environment, and believe that architects play a key role in researching, informing and designing a responsible and regenerative built environment.
Thinking about buildings
Working within planetary boundaries
MOPA is collaborative in spirit, and we have an extensive network of experienced built environment professionals who we bring together to form robust and environmentally conscious design teams.
We seek opportunities for co-design with our clients and their stakeholders.
We enjoy collaborating with other designers, and with the makers, builders and fabricators who materialise our projects.
Existing buildings and Retrofit
Our team have conservation and retrofit expertise so we are uniquely qualified to help you understand the opportunities for insulating, repairing and re-servicing your traditional or listed building.
We have a detailed working knowledge of both traditional and modern sustainable construction techniques.
Our team includes experienced and conservation accredited architects. We have the in depth expertise to advise on the maintenance, repair and adaptation of your listed building or heritage asset.
Architecture and equity
We can help you understand the opportunities and constraints of your building or site from the outset. We add value to projects at the very early stages by considering all users - identifying and exploring alternative uses, designs or routes for delivery.
We have extensive experience working on public buildings and across complex estates. We provide early stage viability input, feasibility thinking and consultation including project stakeholders, end users and understanding market conditions.

Matter of Place Architects CIC (MOPA) are an architectural practice specialising in environmentally conscious design for complex sites, existing and listed buildings. Good urban design makes a significant contribution to the wellbeing of a community. As architects and designers, MOPA look to maximise the contribution of their work in the development of a fair, responsible and equitable society.
MOPA help people build and redevelop buildings across the UK from our base in Norwich. Through best practice community engagement, we further participatory design and influence the design of buildings to maximise the public benefit for embodied and operational carbon cost.
MOPA is a skills development vehicle committed to training sustainable leadership skills and embedding the necessary expertise for the management of the environment in our team. We invest in ongoing CPD and seek opportunities to secure funding for internal and external training in the responsible design and management of buildings.
MOPA are working on retrofit designs funded by a grant through the Norfolk County Council Growth Through Innovation Fund.
